Barcelona super star Lionel Messi
hopes to cement his legendary status by breaking a 53 year record set by
Brazilian legend, Edson Arantes do Nascimiento, popularly known as Pele.
The Argentine scored his 15th La Liga hat-trick
as Barcelona held on to overcome a determined Deportivo la Coruna 5-4 to
go three points clear at the top on Saturday.
Messi’s heroics brought his goal tally for both club and
country scored in a single year to 71 just four shy of a
record set by Pele in 1959.
Pele, the man considered by many as the greatest footballer ever
scored 75 times in a single year, 66 for his club Santos and 9 for Brazil.
Messi, has scored 59 for Barcelona and 12 for Argentina,
taking his tally to 71 which is one more than his record breaking returns last
season.
The Argentine has now scored 11 times in eight appearances for
Barcelona two more than his Real Madrid nemesis, Cristiano Ronaldo.
It was a happy day for the 25-year old Argentina prodigy as he
went to welcome his first born son after the match.
“Messi is off to hospital now for a happy occasion as his son is
on the way,” Barca Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta told Spanish media.
