Police in Mbale are hunting for a student who allegedly killed his colleague while fighting for alcohol.
The suspect was a Senior Four student at Progressive High School in Mbale. He allegedly stabbed Emmanuel Lukoli, a senior Senior Six student at the same school.
The suspect and the victim have been sharing a rented room at Buwalasi View, a suburb of Mbale Municipality.
According to eye witnesses, the Wednesday incident was sparked by an argument over a sachet of waragi. The disagreement later degenerated into a fight. During the fight, Lukoli was allegedly stabbed to death.
Ms Diana Nandawula, the Elgon Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident.
She said the victim died instantly after being stabbed in the chest.
Ms Nandawula said preliminary investigations indicate that the duo spent the day in the bar drinking alcohol.
In July 2012, a similar incident occurred at Bugisu High School in Mbale, when a female student stabbed and killed a colleague.
In Uganda, a sizeable number of students consume alcohol and abuse drugs. Analysts say, the problem is partly responsible for rising crime and school dropout rates
