DAR ES SALAAM AMONG AFRICA`S TOP 5 FASHIONABLE CITIES.

Posted on Aug 20, 2012 | No Comments

Fashion has reached it peak in Africa , and many African cities have been putting together fashion week-like events to celebrate African fashion and designers. These events give encouragement and opportunity to new talents in lesser-known enterprises and attempts to show the world the diversity, originality and richness of local African cultures.
My picks of Africa's top fashion cities are ; Johannesburg, Lagos, Dakar, Dar es Salaam and Abuja.

1.JOHANNESBURG , SOUTH AFRICA
Johannesburg is one of Africa's most popular city and its no wonder it made it to my list .It has more resources than most other Africa countries  to pull off such events. The showcase features the nation's best designers unveilling their creative forecast of the season's trends to a global audience of media, fashion buyers and fashion consumers.
Organizers of the SA fashion week state that it is their mission to take African fashion to the world.

2. LAGOS , NIGERIA
“Lagos International Fashion Week (LIFW) takes place in Lagos Nigeria and is being produced by Mahogany Productions & Glasgow Fashion Week. Lagos made it to my list because I know a lot of very talented and creative designers from Nigeria. Nigerians are taking over, the music business, modeling industry ,movie industry and now the fashion industry. Lagos fashion week should definitely be something to watch out for.

3.DAKAR, SENEGAL
Colle Ardo Sow, graduate of the Institute of Cut and Haute couture of Paris, Colle Sow Ardo created its claw in 1983 in Dakar in Senegal. She is one of senegal's most known and respected designer. She has made her mark in fashion in Senegal, and because of that she was given the title 'Reine de pagne tisse'means 'queen of loincloths'. She is a big part of Dakar's fashion week and says that the objective of dakar fashion week is not only to contribute to Africa's modern fashion, but to also support organizations in charge of homeless children.

4.DAR ES SALAM, TANZANIA
Who knew Tanzania was a fashion city ? Fashion designer and qualified doctor ,Mustafa Hassanali introduced the swahili fashion week. It is a platform for designers - both fashion and accessory - from Swahili speaking countries to showcase their creativity, market their art and network with their clientele. This is all aimed at promoting fashion as an income generating, job creating industry while emphasizing a "Made in East Africa" concept. By the way, im looking forward to a trip to Tanzania to see for my self what this city has to offer. *smiley face*

5. NIAMEY, NIGER
Sidi-Ahmed Seidnaly, one of the African delegates from Niger, wants to promote African fashion not only across Africa but also worldwide via his company. He is also the creator of the International Festival of African Fashion (FIMA), which is held every two years in Niger, and attracts more than 2,000 people. The event gives encouragement and opportunity to new talents in lesser-known enterprises and attempts to show the world the diversity, originality and richness of local African cultures.Niger!? who knew

Some African cities like Douala, Yaounde dint make the list , but have very fashionable poople. I guess they just need to step up their game and get more involved in designing and runway productions.
