President Mwai Kibaki has today
inaugurated Kenya’s first commuter train at Syokimau Railway Station along
Mombasa Road. The train is Kenya’s first modern metro railway station and is
expected to ease Nairobi’s traffic problem.
The new train service will incorporate the use of electronic
ticketing. Its coaches will accommodate 70 seated passengers and 120 standing.
The new train service will cover a distance of about 16.5 kilometers between
Syokimau and Nairobi’s city center when complete. The train is expected to
serve some 20,000 passengers every day.
Speaking during the ceremony Kibaki said “it is now my
pleasure to officially launch the Nairobi commuter service and the Syokimau
Railway Station.”
Kibaki also sneaked in reference to the current heated
political environment in his speech saying;
“Let us not be too preoccupied with the coming election, the
creation of employment for young people should be top priority.”
The train is now taking its inaugural journey from Syokimau
to Nairobi.
