As South
Africa’s post-apartheid president and elder statesman, Nelson Mandela spends
his fourth day in hospital, the South African government has disclosed that he
is suffering from a lung infection but is responding well to treatment.
This is the first time
officials have revealed the reason behind the 94-year old Mandela’s admission
to a military hospital in the administrative capital, Pretoria, on Saturday.
Tests showed a “recurrence of a
previous lung infection”, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said. Mr Mandela
is responding to his treatment, Mr Maharaj added.
News of Mandela’s hospital stay
had prompted a wave of concern in his home country of South Africa, the African
continent and the world in general.
