UGANDAN SHS 77M STOLEN IN CITY ROBBERY ATTACK

A recent robbery in Ntinda in which four people were arrested, some suspected to be attached to the Special Forces Group.

Suspected armed robbers managed to penetrate a city security ring and carried out another daylight robbery in the middle of the capital after a fierce shootout with security guards near Makerere University yesterday.

The suspects are believed to have been travelling in a Toyota Corona and were reportedly armed with automatic rifles which they used to attack a beer depot, CK Uganda Limited, at around 8am as a car transporting money to the bank was being driven out of the depot.

Police later arrested three people attached to a beer depot as investigations into the daring raid got underway although the suspected robbers are said to have escaped with their loot.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Ibin Ssenkumbi said police tried to pursue the suspects but they abandoned the get-away car near a road junction to Ndejje University in Mengo and took off with at least Shs77 million.

“The suspects who attacked the depot are believed to be five in number. In the car they abandoned, we found a (gun) magazine and bullet cartridges,” Mr Ssenkumbi said.

This is the latest in a string of armed robberies that have shocked city residents since the year started. Police and other security organs have asked worried city dwellers to maintain a high level of personal vigilance amid what has at times threatened to be a deteriorating situation. Early this month, a supervisor of a betting company was shot dead in Bukoto, a Kampala suburb, by suspected thugs who made off with an unknown amount of cash.

Last month, police arrested four people, some suspected to be officers attached to the army’s elite Special Forces Group, in a foiled robbery in Ntinda.

Such incidents were more pronounced in the 1990s, forcing President Museveni to establish a joint security operation code-named Operation Wembley to deal with armed gangs.
