Moshi. Police have said that a total of Sh1.3 billion, $ 551,777 and 8,897 Euros has been stolen in the country recently through different forms of cybercrimes.
Moshi. Police have said that a total of Sh1.3 billion, $ 551,777 and 8,897 Euros has been stolen in the country recently through different forms of cybercrimes.
The chief of Forensic Bureau in the Police Force, Mr Jamal
Rwambo, warned here at the weekend that the situation posed a
threat to the Tanzanian economy.
“It is high time people stopped providing to strangers detailed
information about their bank accounts such as full names and
passwords to individuals they don’t trust or not aware of their
backgrounds,” he said. He was speaking during the closing of a
weeklong training for detectives from across the country at the
Moshi-based Police academy.
The Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) said his force had
started implementing some reforms aimed to address incidents of
cybercrime.
According to him, most of the victims of cybercrime often fall prey to
hackers on the Internet through electronic communication channels
such as mobile phones, the Web and banks’ smart cards. He called
on experts in Information Technology (IT) and other stakeholders
to assist the government in coming up with a comprehensive policy
and law on cybercrime to cope with emerging technological
challenges.
For his part,
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Andrew Jumamosi said the
culprits of cybercrime always strived to be smart enough ahead of
the law enforcers.
He
noted that at the moment, the police had been forced to use the penal
code and other related laws to combat such crime due to lack of
appropriate cyber laws.
A police detective from Kilimanjaro Region, Ms Judith Protas, said
the course had been very useful in increasing their understanding
on cybercrime. She promised to apply and impart the knowledge
she gained to her colleagues.
