Not long ago when Dutch striker Robin Van Persie was banging in goals for North
London Club Arsenal with reckless abandon, the Gunners were branded a ‘one man
team’ but now that the shoe is the other foot and is doing the same for the Red
Devils he’s conveniently being labeled a top drawer, sheer class, and all those
fancy adjectives.
But the sad reality is, United are
slowly gravitating into a one man team as this stats will attest.
Without Van Persie’s 20 goals,
Manchester United will be languishing 12th in the Premier League and out of the
FA Cup - a competition they last won in 2004.
On Saturday, the £24m summer
acquisition underlined his talisman status when he came off the bench to rescue
United from being dumped out of the FA Cup when he beautifully controlled Ryan
Giggs’ lofted pass to rifle an equalizer and earn Sir Alex Ferguson’s men a
replay in stoppage time.
Granted United have developed a knack
of winning from losing positions, the manner at which they are conceding goals
could prove their undoing especially in the Champions League where each goal
conceded matter keeping in mind the away goal rule.
AS for Van Persie, he will keep
scoring when he wants and constantly remind Arsenal fans what they lost.
